Minimizing cost, maximizing simplicity
Becton Dickinson
Safety Needle
Drawing on the success of our previous safety syringe collaboration, Humanfactors again worked with BD on refining their 2nd generation safety needle program. We worked closely with BD’s Design Team to streamline their 2-piece cannula, simplified the front and rear hub into a single component, and developed a more robust release button for the safety shield. We also managed to reduce costs by minimizing part volume while maintaining needle stability, improved the ease of cannula assembly, and increased surface area to improve spring tracking. We then developed a series of user friendly, easily accessible blister pack packaging designs to house the finished product.
Conceptual Development
We worked closely with BD’s Design Team to eliminate their cumbersome 2-piece cannula, simplified the front and rear hub into a single component, and developed a more robust release button for the safety shield. We also managed to reduce costs by minimizing part volume while maintaining needle stability, improved the ease of cannula assembly, and increased surface area to improve spring tracking.
Packaging Development
The second phase of the project focused on developing a series of user friendly, easily accessible blister pack packaging concepts to house the finished product. Sterility, transparency, ease of use, and minimal wastage guided each of the various design directions.
