PositionOR

PositionOR is a unique operating room device that serves as an extra set of “hands” in the surgical field. Weighing less than 12 pounds, it is designed for quick setup and break-down, attaching to the OR table in just seconds. Its design mimics the motion of a human arm, articulating about the wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints. Based on our extensive medical device experience, Surgical Concept Designs needed Humanfactors to address the PositionOR's industrial design, focusing on the surgeon's ease-of-use, its deployment within a crowded surgical field, and its aesthetic impact on surgeons and investors alike.

Aesthetics

This product had to look as dynamic as its technical capability is cutting edge. Several rounds of concepts were evaluated - brutalist bulges, sculptural sweeps, basic boxology. Dynamic aesthetics continued into the custom cart, where concepts addressed the device’s safe transport, secure storage, and auxiliary power options.

Capability

A broad scope of instruments can be mounted to the end of the device, but this is typically an instrument that needs to be held steady, in one position (e.g. retractors), over the course of the procedure. An intuitive, single-push button makes the entire armature go slack so that the user can position the instrument anywhere within the device’s radius of motion.

Surgical Testing

The device is invaluable to surgeons who can mount retractors and, with the touch of a button, easily move the armature to virtually any position over the surgical site, and then automatically lock the instrument into place simply by releasing it. Repositioning is just a button push away, and the instrument will never let go until it’s moved.
