Paul Regan Architects was facing an unusual dilemma—a client had requested a grotto-like bathroom interior, replete with multiple water sources, undulating walls, and a wall-through fishtank. Analyzing the design problem as if it were simply a large product, Humanfactors created evolving sketch iterations of interior concepts, and CAD models to show spatial relationships for user integration and construction requirements. Once the complex assembly strategy was generated, Humanfactors researched a machinable, antimicrobial substrate which could be CNC'd in sections, then assembled within the environment like a life-sized, three-dimensional puzzle. The pieces were then grouped into manageable segments, fiberglassed in groups, and then brought back into the chamber for final installation and finishing.
